Erasmus+ Incoming Students for Study and Traineeship (Extra EU)

Logo Erasmus+

The Erasmus+ KA171 Programme offers students from universities in partner countries the opportunity to spend a period of studies and/or traineeship at the University of Messina. The candidate student must be enrolled at a partner University that has signed an Inter Institutional Agreement with the University of Messina under the Erasmus+ Program.

The Erasmus+ KA171 Programme is open to Bachelor's, Master's and PhD students.

Mobility students will be awarded a scholarship, will attend courses/labs and will use all the facilities of the University of Messina on an equal basis as the enrolled students. A tax waiver policy will be adopted (except the fees due by all enrolled students – urban mobility, labs etc).

There are 2 types of mobility:

  • mobility for study
  • mobility for traineeship
  • mobility for study and for traineeship (combined mobility)

The following activities are allowed:

- attending full-time courses and takin exams;
- conducting activities aimed at writing the thesis;
- thesis research activities;
- traineeships

The duration of the physical mobility can be one of two types:

  • long mobility: minimum 2 months - maximum 12 months
  • short mobility: minimum 5 days - maximum 30 days

Bachelor's and Master's students wishing to undertake short mobility must also undertake a period of remote virtual mobility so that the combined physical and virtual mobility lasts at least 2 months (blended mobility).

The activity will be agreed upon with the international mobility coordinator of the respective degree programme , with the coordinator/head of the Doctoral Program or with the tutor designated for the research or traineeship at UNIME using, depending on the activities to be carried out, the templates prepared for the Learning Agreement for Studies, the Learning Agreement for Traineeships and the Research Proposal.

The Erasmus+ scholarship consists of travel contribution and individual support.

1. Individual support is based on the duration of the mobility:

- Long mobility: €900.00/month
- Short mobility: €79.00/day for mobility periods lasting 5 to 14 days; €56.00/day from the 15th to the 30th day.

2. The travel contribution, determined by the Distance Calculator developed by the European Commission based on the distance in kilometers between the departure and destination cities, ranges from a minimum of €211.00 to a maximum of €1,735.00 (Travel contribution amounts table). Additional grants are also available for green travel, i.e., travel using sustainable means of transport such as bus, train, bicycle, or carpooling. In addition to the increased travel grant, participants can receive individual support to cover accommodation expenses for up to 6 days of travel.

3. Supplementary Grant for Students with Fewer Opportunities

The Erasmus+ Program recognizes a supplementary grant for students with fewer opportunities to facilitate access to mobility. This supplementary grant aims to provide a tool to overcome the obstacles that various target groups may encounter in accessing these opportunities and will be awarded to selected students for the entire duration of their mobility period and in addition to the grants listed above.

Students belonging to more than one of the categories listed below may avail of the grants for students with fewer opportunities, with reference to only one of the following categories:

  1. students in disadvantaged economic conditions based on income as established by individual national provisions;
  2. Students with certified special needs (physical, mental, health);
  3. Students with minor children;
  4. Working students;
  5. Professional student athletes;
  6. Students who have lost at least one parent;
  7. Students whose parents are victims of terrorism and organized crime;
  8. Students with refugee status.

The supplementary contribution is based on the duration of the mobility:
