1990- Researcher, Earth Science Department of the University of Modena
1998- Associate Professor of Mineralogy, Earth Science Department of the University of Messina
2000- Full Professor of Mineralogy, Dipartimento di Scienze Matematiche e Informatiche, Scienze Fisiche e Scienze della Terra, University of Messina.
1993 Panichi Award, Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrografia.
2005 Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America
Simona Quartieri is Full Professor of Mineralogy at the University of Messina. Her main interests are in experimental and theoretical studies of silicate minerals, natural zeolites and synthetic porous materials under ambient and non-ambient conditions, mainly using X-ray single-crystal and powder diffraction (with conventional and synchrotron radiation sources), spectroscopic techniques (X-ray absorption spectroscopy and IR spectroscopy) and ab-initio Molecular Dynamics simulations.
SQ is author of more than 140 papers on international peer-reviewed journals and has given several invited talks in national and international meetings. She is Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America and has been President and vice President of the Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrografia from 2006 to 2010. She has been Associate Editor of The American Mineralogist from 2000 to 2005 and reviewer for many international journals.
SQ has been member of the Italian Commission for the evaluation of the proposals for GILDA beamline at ESRF and of the IUCr CrysAC Commission on Crystallography in Art and Cultural Heritage. She has been member of the “Commissione Nazionale per il Conferimento dell’Abilitazione a Professore Universitario (04A1)” for the runs 2012 and 2013.
SQ has been responsible of the scientific organization of national and international meetings, workshops and thematic sessions. She gave talks and lessons in several national and international schools.
The principal research projects developed and supervised by SQ regard the study of:
a) high-T and high-P behavior, cation exchange and diffusion processes in zeolites by means of an integrated theoretical-experimental approach based on conventional and synchrotron X-ray diffraction and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations;
b) local geometry, oxidation state and short-range ordering of major, minor and trace elements in rock-forming minerals, investigated by synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Multiple Scattering calculations;
c) ancient glass and musive tesserae of archaeological interest.
In particular, SQ is presently involved in the study of the high-P and high-T behavior, the cation exchange and the diffusion processes in zeolites and porous materials, by means of an integrated theoretical-experimental approach based on synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics simulations. The aim of this work is to interpret, from the structural point of view, the thermal stability and the compressibility behavior of this class of microporous materials and their possible environmental and technological applications.
